A Scrutiny of Blackjack Insurance
Let's say you were playing blackjack and the dealer gets an Ace for an up card. The dealer then offers insurance to players. Now, the question is whether you will take blackjack insurance or not. The general advice is that players should never take blackjack insurance. This side bet isn't necessarily a really bad wager to make in this game.
Insurance is a side bet in blackjack. This is offered when the dealer has a chance of making a blackjack, which is a sure win. If you accept the dealer's offer for insurance you make the side bet up to half the total amount of your original wager. You put this at the stripe near your original bet on the table layout. The dealer will then check the hole card for a ten-value card.
If the hole card is a ten-value card, your insurance wins and is paid at two to one. Your hand will be played accordingly, which means that even though the dealer has a blackjack you have a chance to tie if your own hand is a blackjack. However, if the dealer doesn't have a hole card then you lose your insurance. If you lose your original hand but win the insurance you will only break even.
Insurance isn't exactly a bad bet but it is a poor one. The house advantage for this blackjack side bet ranges from two percent to 15 percent depending on how many decks are used in the table you're playing at. If ever you have a natural and the dealer has an Ace for an up card, you usually won't be offered insurance but instead will be offered even money.
Being offered even money will have the same effect as getting the insurance side bet. If you accept the offer to be paid even money for your natural you are immediately paid even if the dealer hasn't checked for a ten-value hole card. Now, whether the dealer does have a natural or not you will break even, which is the same payout as if making the blackjack insurance bet.
Card counters do get away with it when they make insurance bets. If they are able to determine that the deck has more ten-value cards in it, then they make insurance knowing that they will most probably win this side bet, which is a smart move. The blackjack insurance side bet is a poor wager to make if you take it blindly not knowing the probability of getting a ten-value card.
